HL7 ORM
An HL7 v2 order message — transmits imaging or clinical orders and order-status changes between systems.
When to use it
Whenever an order placed in the EMR/PMS must reach the RIS or department system.
In plain terms
The request slip that starts the whole exam workflow.
Common gotchas
- ORM is superseded by OMG/OMI in newer HL7 versions — some sites still use ORM.
- Order control codes (NW, CA, XO) change the meaning: new vs cancel vs change.
- A dropped order upstream means the exam never appears on the worklist.
