MPPS
Modality Performed Procedure Step — reports procedure status (started, completed, discontinued) from the modality back to the RIS/worklist.
When to use it
When the worklist loop should close automatically and drive status and charge capture.
In plain terms
The technologist clocking each exam in and out so the front office knows it happened.
Common gotchas
- N-CREATE signals "in progress"; N-SET signals completion — both are needed to close the loop.
- Not every modality/RIS pair supports MPPS reliably.
- Missing MPPS means manual status updates and delayed billing.
