VNA

A Vendor Neutral Archive — a long-term image store designed to hold studies independently of any single PACS vendor, so images outlive the system that created them.

When to use it

Use a VNA when an organization consolidates imaging across departments or vendors, or needs a vendor-independent archive for retention and migration.

In plain terms

If a PACS is a department's working photo library, the VNA is the central, vendor-neutral warehouse everything is eventually filed into.

Common gotchas

  • "Vendor neutral" refers to standardized storage and tags, not zero integration work — tag morphing between systems is common.
  • A VNA usually complements rather than replaces the PACS; the PACS still drives the reading workflow.
  • Retrieval performance for deep archives can differ from the front-line PACS.
