FTP / SFTP
File transfer over FTP or, securely, SFTP — moving files between hosts across a network.
When to use it
For scheduled or cross-boundary file exchange, especially with external partners.
In plain terms
Couriering a sealed folder to another building (SFTP) versus sending it in the clear (FTP).
Common gotchas
- Prefer SFTP — plain FTP sends credentials and data unencrypted.
- Key/credential rotation and host-key trust are ongoing tasks.
- Firewall and passive-mode port ranges often bite FTP setups.
