Manual / Paper
A manual or paper-based exchange, or a user-defined protocol — for steps that aren't a standard electronic message.
When to use it
When a connection is manual (paper, phone, fax) or uses a bespoke format the standard list doesn't cover.
In plain terms
The hand-carried note when there's no wire between two systems.
Common gotchas
- Manual/paper steps have no ACK and no audit trail — call out the risk.
- Define a custom protocol's format explicitly so it's reproducible.
- These are prime automation candidates later.
